Flood of Tilley

I love Tilley hats. I think it is no secret that I have had my first Tilley replaced twice already. Purchased at the Calgary Stampede when I was in my teens. I think the made in Canada hat has changed what is an important accessory in outdoor wearables. The premise behind the hat is amazing, and it has been a company that I adored ever since they started. It's durability, washability, function, and somehow now style is beyond the throwaway nature of current caps. Now that the company has been sold. There are slight differences in the product. The hat seems to be franchised and licensed. Sold in locations I thought would never be possible. I saw it in MEC and recently for a short stint it was in Costco. The main difference I notice is the guaranteed for life tag on the inside. 

I was starting to think that this might be the end of Tilley as I knew it. The owner sold to a venture capital group. The brand is capitalizing on the mall markets. Then I found a salvation moment. I'm on Reddit, and through the postings I was directed to a lot of 12 Tilley hats from the USA. I did the math and even with the Duty charge the hats cost about $20 each. Considering a Tilley retails for around $80. This was a deal I couldn't ignore. Throw on top of this that most if not all the hats are guaranteed for life. My 12 hats are not only lightly used, when they die, they will be replaced for the cost of shipping... a zen moment for sure.

The Duty charge was a surprise. I had no choice but to pay it, but DHL and the Boarder Agency thought that I needed to pay duty on a hat made in Canada but sold back to a Canadian from the USA. While I waste time fighting this absurd charge, I am left to wonder if it is worth it to fight the charge... Yes, yes on principal it is. Funny story. I appealed, they didn't totally deny the claim, but asked that I submit pictures. When I called the guy on the phone suggested I needed more than a picture of the tag... A certificate of origin was preferred. 

Tilley was an Canadian Company. The hats as far as the tag says it is made in the boarders of Canada. Do you think they would believe a history lesson? If you have ever watched Disney+ you may have watched the border security show. There are lots of fake products passing the boarder. I decided to take shots, and ask Tilley for the Certificate. It is about principle but oh it is a waste of time. Tilley couldn't open high quality photos, they take days to respond. Its a funny distraction. I will likely stop while I am ahead. Probably not.

The Rock and a Hard Place - Why Fred won't or even consider leaving GVP.

Fred Hahn is the President of CUPE ON. He is in the media for many reasons. Currently it is about something he posted and what that makes him according to people who don't know him, or what CUPE is fighting for. As complicated as this is. There is a reason why we won't see him step down. It has everything to do with what the Convention Resolution allows him to do and how a person who makes mistakes can apologize, learn from the mistake and move forward. It also has to do with how the NEB is formed and why removal of any NEB member is nearly an impossible ask. Just like asking for your Preimere to step down.

Round Two Done. L38/37 takes the deal.

Deal struck. 3, 3.25, 3.25. Everything else was the same except for stronger language on the seasonal recall. Thanks to everyone that came out to vote.

Memorandum of Settlement - Three Year Deal sweetened with 0.5%.

Information is working its way down the chain. What I can share is in the episode. This is a yes for me. I hope you can find it in your selves to vote yes as well. Compounded this deal is 9.8% over three years. I am told what was offered and accepted in principal is 3, 3.25, 3.25. Some language changes around seasonal recall but all the other negotiated items were included as well. 

 

Looking forward to signing this deal, and thanks to the Union officers who took a good offer, listened to the membership, went back and squeezed out a bit over 0.5% including the other monitary items.

No for the 3,3,3 deal. Now what? Strike Mandate

Strike mandate on the horizon.

My thoughts. Some may think we are in a zero sum game, or a win-win. At this stage we are hovering near a lose-lose.  We are in a cooling off portion. Call the hall if you have questions.

L37 is moving forward. L38 is cooling off.

L37 is being offered 3%x3 over 3 years.

L38 is being offered 3%, 3%, 2%. They are asking for 4%, 3.5%, 3%.

Compounded from both the difference is about 1.59%. They are dealing with other issues that L37 are not concerned with, but L37 have got in writing some things they have been looking for going back many contracts.

My support for L38 and my desire to move forward with our proposed contract are important in my dedication. 1.59% may not be much but sometimes it is not entirely the monetary that keeps contracts from being signed.
